Day 01: Airport – Pinnawala – Dambulla – Sigiriya

You will arrive at the Bandaranaike International Airport. From there you visit Dambulla and Sigiriya via Pinnawala which is a 25-acre coconut property. Baby elephants being bottle-fed or moving around freely causing absolutely no harm to anyone can be witnessed in Pinnawala. It was established in 1975 as Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage to take care of these gentle giants. Since that time, more than 20 calves have been born at the orphanage. You would be surprised to hear that some of the elephants there have even seen their grandchildren! At 10:00 am and 2:00 pm these elephants can be seen taking a river bath twice a day.
Traveling through Pinnawala our next destination would be the cave temple in Dambulla. The ancient hub of Dambulla goes back to the 1st century B.C. which has been ruled by many kings. Today, Dambulla Rock Temple houses some of the most unique drawings constructed within the magnificent 5 cave temples which flank the golden temple of Dambulla. Exquisite cave paintings are drawn along walls that shelter 150 statues of Lord Buddha. As you enter inside, a gigantic Buddha statue glittering in gold will welcome you. With the first day being done, an overnight stay will be at a hotel in Sigiriya.

The main attractions there are Ruwanweli Maha Seya & Sri Maha Bodhi. Ruwanweli Maha Seya is a hemispherical dome structure containing relics. Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi is a sacred Bodhi tree in the Mahamewna Gardens; it is the oldest living human-planted tree in the world which is proven with a known planting date. Among the Buddhists, it is one of the most sacred relics in Sri Lanka and is respected by Buddhists all over the world.
