Unforgettable Cultural Travel Experiences You Should Try

Hello, my name is Mel Witharana. I was born and raised in the beautiful island nation of Sri Lanka, surrounded by a vibrant culture, lush landscapes, and the warm hospitality of my people. In 1999, I left my homeland and moved to the United States to pursue higher education. While I embraced the opportunities and challenges of my new life in America, a deep part of me always remained connected to my roots in Sri Lanka.

A few years ago, I discovered cycling—not just as a form of exercise, but as a passion and lifestyle. What started as a simple hobby quickly transformed into a way of life. Over time, my bike has taken me across continents, through city streets and remote mountain passes, allowing me to see the world in a way few people can. Along the way, I’ve participated in numerous amateur races and group rides in various countries. But no matter where I go, Sri Lanka holds a special place in my heart—and in my cycling journey.

The Start of a Passion

Like many people, I first took up cycling to stay active and healthy. But what I quickly realized was that cycling gave me so much more than physical benefits. It offered mental clarity, a sense of adventure, and an opportunity to connect with people and places in an intimate, unfiltered way.

From scenic rides along California’s Pacific Coast Highway to grueling climbs in the Alps and rolling terrain across European countryside, cycling became my passport to explore the world differently. I’ve met fellow cyclists from all walks of life, each with their own stories and reasons for riding. These experiences not only expanded my view of the world, but also deepened my appreciation for the simplicity and freedom that comes with being on two wheels.

Bringing My Bike Back Home

Despite my global adventures, I’ve always felt a strong pull to return to Sri Lanka—to reconnect with the land that shaped me. Over the years, I’ve brought my bike back to Sri Lanka many times, eager to explore its terrain, culture, and people in a way I couldn’t fully appreciate as a child.

What I found was nothing short of magical.

Sri Lanka may be small on the map, but it offers some of the most diverse and picturesque cycling routes in the world. From golden beaches to misty highlands, dense rainforests to ancient cities, every ride offers a new adventure. And whether you’re a seasoned cyclist or a casual rider, Sri Lanka has something for everyone.

The Roads Less Traveled

I’ve ridden through many well-known areas in Sri Lanka—Colombo, Galle, Kandy, Ella, and Nuwara Eliya, just to name a few. Of course, like any developing country, there are challenges. Traffic congestion in cities like Colombo and Galle can be intense. But what truly surprised me—and what keeps bringing me back—is how safe and respected I’ve felt as a cyclist.

Even in the busiest streets, I’ve noticed that drivers are remarkably aware of cyclists. Many slowed down to give me space, honked gently as a way of signaling rather than intimidating, and some even waved or smiled as I passed. There were moments when I got lost navigating unfamiliar back roads, but every time, I was met with kindness and helpful directions from locals—many of whom were curious and enthusiastic about what I was doing.

This welcoming environment makes Sri Lanka a hidden gem for cyclists.

A Climber’s Paradise

If you’re someone who loves climbing, Sri Lanka’s central highlands are a dream come true. Towns like Nuwara Eliya, Haputale, and Ella offer incredible mountain routes with challenging gradients, winding switchbacks, and breathtaking views. Cycling up through tea plantations and into cool, misty hills is unlike anything you’ll experience elsewhere.

The famous climb to “Lipton’s Seat” near Haputale, named after tea magnate Sir Thomas Lipton, is one of my personal favorites. As you ascend, the landscape transforms dramatically—from tropical warmth to cool, refreshing air—accompanied by panoramic views that stretch for miles. The sense of achievement you feel reaching the top is matched only by the serenity and natural beauty that surrounds you.

For riders looking for a full multi-day adventure, you can plan routes from the southern coast up to the central highlands and back—offering a mix of coastal roads, forest trails, village paths, and mountain climbs. The variation in terrain makes it both challenging and incredibly rewarding.

People Make the Ride

More than the landscapes, it’s the people who have made my rides in Sri Lanka truly unforgettable. There’s a sincerity in the way locals interact with visitors, especially cyclists. Whether it’s a roadside fruit seller offering a fresh king coconut to cool down, a child waving excitedly as you pass by, or a tuk-tuk driver giving you a thumbs-up—these moments remind me why I’m proud to call Sri Lanka home.

During one of my visits, I stopped in a small village to adjust my bike. Within minutes, I was surrounded by curious kids asking questions, offering snacks, and even trying out my helmet. It wasn’t long before a nearby shopkeeper offered me a cup of hot tea and asked about my travels. These simple acts of generosity and connection leave lasting impressions—and they happen often in Sri Lanka.

My Recommendation

If you’ve ever considered combining travel with cycling, I wholeheartedly recommend visiting Sri Lanka. The country has everything a cyclist could want: stunning scenery, challenging routes, supportive locals, rich culture, and delicious food to fuel your rides. Whether you’re climbing in the central highlands or cruising along the southern coast, every ride tells a story.

And it’s not just about the sport—it’s about discovering yourself and the world around you through the rhythm of the pedals. There’s something liberating about exploring a country by bike. You move slow enough to take everything in, but fast enough to cover incredible distances. You notice the smells, the sounds, the people, and the subtle shifts in the landscape. You become part of the place, rather than just a visitor passing through.

Final Thoughts

Cycling has changed my life. It’s made me healthier, happier, and more connected to the world around me. It has allowed me to explore the world, meet extraordinary people, and challenge myself in ways I never imagined. And through all my travels, the experiences I’ve had cycling in Sri Lanka stand among the most meaningful and memorable.

As someone born on this island, returning as a cyclist has been a deeply personal journey—a homecoming of sorts. Every ride reminds me of how much this small country has to offer, and how proud I am to share its beauty with others.

So, to anyone reading this—whether you’re an experienced rider or someone just getting started—I encourage you to bring your bike, your curiosity, and your adventurous spirit to Sri Lanka. The roads are waiting, the hills are calling, and the people will welcome you with open arms.

Happy riding!
